How to Care for Your Stone Benchtops

If you have stone benchtops in your home – both in the kitchen and bathrooms – it’s important you know how to care for them properly so you will get many years use out of them and have them still looking great. Let’s take a look at some tips on how to care for some of the more common varieties of stone benchtops and kitchen countertops.

Marble Stone

Marble stone is a popular choice for kitchen benchtops and bathroom vanity tops because it exudes luxury. Marble comes in many unique patterns and colour combinations and can look truly stunning in the home.

To keep you marble stone countertops clean, never use anything acidic. Often, warm soapy water is enough to remove grime and debris, followed by a rinse of fresh water. Dishwashing liquid that has been diluted works best and a spray bottle is handy for this purpose.

Granite Stone

Granite stone is considerably tougher and more durable than marble stone, so you don’t have to be quite as delicate with it. Still, it’s always best to avoid abrasive cleaners and cloths, as well as anything acidic. No lemon juice and no vinegar.

Again it’s best just to use the warm, soapy water, cleaning the surface off afterwards with a soft cloth damp with fresh water. Microfibre cloths work well for cleaning granite benchtops.

Engineered Stone

Engineered stone is a manufactured stone made up of predominantly quartz particles blended with a resin to hold it all together. There are a number of manufactured stones on the market, including:

  • Silestone
  • Caesarstone
  • Smartstone
  • Essastone
  • Quantum Quartz

These stone countertops and kitchen benchtops look fantastic, and here’s how to keep them clean.

As with marble and granite, make up a solution in a spray bottle of dishwashing liquid diluted with plenty of water. Spray down the engineered stone countertops and vanity tops, rinsing off with the microfibre cloth damp with fresh water.

Tips for General Care of All Your Stone Countertops

  • Always use a chopping board
  • Never place hot pans directly on the stone’s surface
  • Never use harsh chemicals on the stone, for cleaning or any other purpose
  • After cleaning, buff the kitchen benchtops and vanity tops with a dry microfibre cloth
  • Regularly have your stone surfaces sealed by a professional to prevent staining
